Sealants

Sealants are a great way to protect your teeth against decay and cavities on the molars. Molars are the teeth that are most vulnerable to cavities and decay due to being used in the chewing process. They are also the most difficult to reach and clean.

Molars first come in around five to seven years of age, and a second set comes in between the age of 11 and 14. We recommend having a sealant placed when the molars first come in to ensure they're protected.

To place a sealant, an adhesive is applied to the teeth. The sealant is then placed over the adhesive by painting the liquid right onto the tooth. The liquid then hardens and creates a barrier between your tooth and any plaque, food particles, and bacteria. Sealants last for around 10 years and can be reapplied if needed.

Mouth Guards

Mouth guards should be used by athletes of all ages who participate in any contact sport. Wearing a mouth guard helps to prevent structural damage to your teeth and jaw, and also prevents injuries such as lacerations to your cheeks, tongue, and lips. Mouth guards have also been proven to help decrease the risk of concussions.

While mouth guards can be purchased in almost any sporting goods store, it's best to use caution as mouth guards like this do not offer the best level of protection and can be ill-fitting and uncomfortable.

For the best level of comfort and protection, visit Dr. John Stivers for a custom mouth guard fitting! A custom mouth guard is created for the optimal protection of your unique mouth. It is created using thin plastic that is hardened to protect your teeth. This thin plastic allows for easy breathing and easy communication.
